Steppers’ Guide: Know the Stage
    Steppers Guide | CrunkMastaStep | 06/06/2009

On iSteptoo.com, we do alot of talking about what steppers do on the stage…but we never really talk about THE ACTUAL STAGE. Knowledge of the stage dimensions, the construction material, and any objects on or around the stage is critical to any performance. Here are some tips for you to use:

1. If possible, try to get as much information as you can about the stage BEFOREHAND (that means at the information session, or through the event coordinator). This will help you adjust routines to fit the confines presented by the “physical environment”.

2. On the day of the show, CHECK-IN as EARLY as possible. This allows you, and the team, to see the stage isolated. This is honestly one of my favorite times in the step experience: Walking in, doing a visual analysis” of the performing space, and gathering as much info as I can about what’s ON the stage (monitors, fixtures, etc.)

3. Use your RUN THROUGH WISELY, you only get one. As a team, you all should be paying attention to relative spacing. If you have any stunts, use this time to get a feel for the “stage surface” (I can’t tell you how many skint knees I’ve seen cuz people tried to do slides on non-slide surfaces –and yes I said “skint”).

4. Before you leave the stage, or at the end of your run through, HIT THE STAGE — HARD!! I don’t mean punch the stage, I’m talking about doing one step routine, with 100% POWER. This is to test the integrity” of the stage. Try to literally BREAK THE STAGE, weaken the support fixtures, knock some s**t completely DOWN, etc. – for 2 reasons: 1) The stage crew/ assemblers will realize how SERIOUS it is, and will make necessary checks & reinforcements, 2) You want to intimidate ALL COMPETITORS!

If you follow these simple procedures, I promise, you will have a competitive edge over others. What are some tips you have about the stage?
