As a female stepper it is important to balance high energy stepping with sex appeal. Women do have somewhat of an advantage when it comes to stepping by doing things such as splits, certain stunts or dance moves that only women could get away with, provocative costumes, and overall sex appeal. Often times, these gestures or tactics “WOW” the crowd. However, sex appeal does not replace high-energy stepping. Regardless of your sex, steppers must be able to step with precision, stamina (crunkness), and attitude. No one wants to watch a show full of lazy steppers. Looks don’t win competitions, stepping does! It is not necessary for women to be sexy when stepping, the point is to win the show. Having sex appeal and the skills necessary to step are not difficult to balance, but steppers should take into account what type of audience they are performing for. If a female step team is performing for a mostly male audience it might be to their advantage to flaunt their sex appeal. Therefore, female steppers must first be able to step and then may use their natural sex appeal to their advantage.
